ABSTRACT: Gambling strategies are "well known" for different types of gambling. For example, most professional horse racing gamblers use the "Kelly criterion" and most pension companies that buy shares use "Markowitz portfolio theory". How are these strategies related? Is one better than the other? What should our pension companies be doing when they invest on our behalf and how should horse racing betting be approached from a ßhare portfolio" perspective? More importantly, can the casual speculator make money from betting? The answers to some of these questions will be looked at from a generalized point of view. The mathematics used will not be technically specialized, so that the subject will be approachable for PhD students of all types.

Switched systems (differential equations whose defining vector field is discontinuous across some surface called the switching surface) arise naturally in models of friction and control. I will derive a return map on the sliding surface of a three-dimensional switched system in normal form in the case that a periodic orbit of one system grazes the switching surface. This return map can be analyzed to show the existence of multistability for the first time. Other bifurcation structures can also be analyzed using the return map. This work is joint with Piotr Kowalcyzk and Arne Nordmark.
